Mary’s Memories

Tony and I stayed with Mrs. Dorrington for a week after coming from hospital, then home  to “Rostella”. We had no problems till perhaps he was about 18 months (Greg was still a baby in a bassinet). The Rosary Sisters were coming on a visit for lunch so I was busy cooking and cleaning. When everything was ready, I went to clean up the kids – all answered except Tony, and when I heard him crying I realised he was in the toilet. Not only in the toilet, but down the pit! I yelled for Jimmy to help me, but found I could just reach Tony’s hand when I stretched down. I caught his hand and pulled him up. Thank goodness it was a newish pit and not very deep, as the ground was extremely hard to dig. Into a Dettol bath, gave him an aspirin, and put him to bed!

On a visit to Nanna Mahy’s once, Tony developed a thirst and, on spotting what he thought to be a bottle of lemonade in the laundry, took a swig. It happened to be kerosene. He was rushed in ten minutes to the nearest hospital in Griffith to have the necessary treatments.

Tony started school at South Forbes, then off to Red Bend where he excelled in all fields.

At the end of 1975, he went to Sydney Institute of Technology where he studied Computer Science for 6 months. He then got a job with MLC Insurance for the rest of the year. In 1977 he went to the Catholic College of Education (CCE) at Castle Hill to study Teaching. He graduated in 1979. In 1980 he started teaching in Condobolin, and in1981 taught at St Lawrence’s Primary School in Forbes. He and Kathy married in 1983. In 1988 they went to Ganmain where Tony was Principal for 5 years. At the beginning of 1993 Tony got the Principal’s job at Laurieton where he has seven subordinate teachers looking after 180 children. He and Kathy have bought a lovely home at Bonny Hills, not far from the beach. He loves to fly kites with Patrick and Katherine.
