Mary’s Memories:

His great adventure was trying to drown himself. The river was well and truly up, and we were cut off from the world. We were living in the wool-shed, and Jim had mustered a few sheep. I ducked out to help him put them through the gate. I must have been away ten minutes. On the way Jim said he would clean out the ‘race’ before using it. he walked over and found Chris face down in the mud. We rushed him inside, Jim was crying and holding him by the legs, and started artificial respiration. Jimmy was working in the shed at “Sharoon” (Rooney’s), and Col and Peter ran the four miles to get Jimmy, as he had the tractor. I worked for almost an hour on Chris, rubbing the skin off his back- he was raw. Then I remembered seeing a movie of Doctor Kildare, where a baby had smothered and he had breathed down its throat,filling the lungs. In desperation I breathed air into Chris and our prayers were answered. He breathed again.
