Mary’s Memories:
Before Greg was born, Sarah had taken all the children, except Jimmy and Colleen, To Nanna Mahy’s in Yenda, and I had stayed with Mrs Dorrington in Bourke. Colleen was at school and Jimmy on “Rostella”. After Greg was born, we went out to “Rostella” for a few weeks then Greg, Colleen, Jimmy and myself went on the train to Yenda for Christmas with the rest of our family. We went back to “Rostella” in February and stayed for one year before going to Forbes.
Greg must have been only tiny when Tony gave him a drink of kerosene. They were sitting on the step at “Rostella” with a saucer of brown sugar, having a snack, and Greg starting coughing. On enquiring what was wrong Tony said, “I was filling him with petrol.” A trip to Bourke to the doctor, but everything turned out OK.
Greg started school at South Forbes and followed his brothers out to Red Bend, and like everyone before him, achieved well at everything. After finishing school he went to the Catholic College of Education, Sydney, but came home after six months. He wandered off to Toowoomba and found work with Southern Cross Foundry. In 1988 he started part-time external studies at University of Southern Queensland. In 1991 he gave up his job and went full-time. He graduated a Bachelor of Business with Honours in 1993 – well done, Greg!!! He is now working at USQ as an Associate Lecturer tutoring in Accounting. Greg appreciates “women’s work” after being home studying for a couple of years. He now knows what Vida does all day and is happy to leave her to it. James and Nigel enjoy their tennis and swimming, and Angela and Michelle are not far behind.
