James Lawrence Watts

Son of James Hanson Watts and Anne Marie Turner.

Born February 2,1880, 8 Park Square, West Leeds.

James is the husband of Alice Hainsworth and the father of James Frederick Watts and Kathleen Mary Robinson (nee Watts).

He is described as a machine fitter and later as a tram driver in Leeds for 49 years. Tram drivers in Leeds were paid very small wages in those days and life was a struggle for his family as money was often short. Alice’s nice, Bessie Littlewood (nee Cathcart) describes James Lawrence as a particular man who was always meticulous about his dress and appearance. He was  a very clever man with his hands and was a very capable joiner and he was also extremely artistic, and particularly enjoyed painting.

During World War 1 he was mentioned in dispatches for bravery and won a medal and a certificate of honour.

As a child he lived in a small back to back house in a poor part of Leeds. He had a sister called Mary and a brother Percy, who was mentally handicapped.

He married again after Alice died, to Ellen ? (Possibly Ellen Flood). He died August 4, 1944 at 18 Grosvenor Place, Leeds, as a result of throat cancer.
