We often went to her Farm 751, Canal Street home to visit. We also stayed there while mum had the last couple of babies and when dad was killed. She always had a beautiful garden. There was no lawn in the front yard. It was all garden beds of flowers. When she was able she grew her own vegetables in the back yard and kept farm birds like chickens and geese. It was a fairly big block and had some big willow trees on it that we climbed whenever we could. (We climbed the almond trees next door too, even though we weren’t supposed to). We spent a lot of time sitting in the channel too, waiting for the water to come down when it was released through the sluices to water the farms and gardens.
